There are numerous different situations that could leave you unemployed, and it’s not always something you did wrong.  It’s important that you know how to handle your money in case you ever find yourself unemployed.

Here are a few finance tips for unemployed adults that are aimed towards helping you recover from unfortunate events.

Workers’ Compensation should help if there’s an injury

If you are injured at work, you have options.  When your employer is the reason for your inability to work due to an injury on the job, you are legally entitled to workers’ compensation.

Your finances will be much more manageable with something coming into your bank account.  Open your claim as soon as possible, so you and your family don’t have to suffer any more losses.

Find out if you qualify for unemployment

You may be eligible for unemployment payments.  If you find yourself without a job, you could get a little financial cushion to bridge your income gap while you’re unemployed.

Not everyone qualifies for unemployment payment, but you may.  Generally speaking, you have to have become unemployed through no fault of your own, be able and available to work, and be actively seeking employment to qualify.

Revamp your budget specifications

Hopefully, you already live life on a budget.  If not, now is definitely the time to formulate a personal budget.  Work your budget around the limited income you have coming your way.

If you have nothing coming in the way of funds, break down your savings with longevity in mind.  You never know how long it will take you to find another job, even if the market is healthy.

Live a frugal life for now

While you’re unemployed, there’s no expense more vital than food and shelter.  Break it down to the essentials, and live a frugal lifestyle. Until you have another source of income, you don’t need a new shirt or a new phone.

Apply for government assistance

When you don’t have a regular income, you have the option of applying for government aid.  Now is not the time to get wrapped up in your pride.  If you don’t have the money to live, there’s no shame in asking for help.

Government assistance programs are also a great plug for some valuable networking opportunities.  Human Services wants you to be able to support yourself, and they are there to help you with the resources you need to achieve that goal.
